"But thou, O Lord, are a shield about me; the glory and the lifter of my head.”
Psalm 3:3
Do you ever ponder over a verse, until the Lord shows you something new?
I ponder while gardening, doing dishes, or folding laundry.
When I’m doing jobs that don’t require a lot of focus, I often think on scriptures
that I have read.
In this case, it was a sleepless night that turned my thoughts toward this verse.
I’ve read this verse many times before, but on this restless night some new thoughts came to me.
Let’s start with the first words…”But thou, O Lord.”
In studying any scripture, it's important to acknowledge who the Lord is.
If you don’t know Jesus as your Lord, it becomes difficult to follow his teaching.
David is speaking to the Lord.
Next it says the Lord is a shield about me. The definition of shield is to
defend and protect. In battle it is held in front to protect from the enemies
attack, so the Lord is protecting us. It's as if the psalmist is speaking aloud to
remind himself of the Lord's protection. It’s good for us to remind ourselves
of this.
Lastly he states, “He is the glory and the lifter of my head.”
This is the section I pondered the most.
Especially when he says, ”The lifter of my head.”
I thought of many reasons a head would be down.
At this point in the chapter, David is talking about the many foes who are rising up against him saying, “God will not deliver him.” David was most likely scared and discouraged.
When I think of someone walking with their head down, I imagine they are
struggling. Maybe they are dealing with health issues, relationship problems, insecurities, or just feeling “beat up” by this world.
But the good news is, He is the glory and the lifter of my head… and yours…
and any who call Him Lord.
I picture the Lord with His hand, gently tilting your head up to see Him.
When Jesus lifts our head, we find love, hope, and victory.
So whatever you are going through today, let Him be the glory and the lifter of your head.
May He fill your heart with joy,
as I pray blessings on you and yours.
